Top perks

Generous no medical exam options

Haven Life Simple makes it possible to buy up to $500,000 in coverage with no medical exam. Many competitors either do not offer coverage options without a medical exam or the coverage limits are much lower -- as low as $25,000.

Top-notch customer service

Haven Life is backed by MassMutual, which has more than 160 years of industry experience. On J.D. Power's 2021 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, MassMutual earned above-average rankings and was beat by just six competitors in terms of its overall customer satisfaction rating.

Access to other services

Haven Life Plus allows policyholders to access other services beyond life insurance at no added costs. This includes a fitness app offering thousands of workouts and music, access to a program that makes it possible to create a customized will or trust that's legally valid in the creator's state, and free use of an app that combines neuroscience and sleep research to help policyholders avoid jet lag while traveling.

What could be improved

Offer more coverage types

Haven Life provides only term life insurance. Permanent life insurance policies aren't offered. While most people will do better with term life coverage, whole life plans make more sense for people in certain situations. This includes circumstances when coverage will always be needed, rather than required for just a limited time.

Provide convertible policy options

Haven Life doesn't provide policyholders with the chance to make their life insurance convertible from a term to a whole life policy if circumstances change. Many competitors do allow this feature, which can be invaluable for those who determine they will need ongoing coverage rather than just protection temporarily during the coverage period.

Provide more coverage terms

Haven Life offers up to five different coverage terms, while some competitors offer more. For example, AIG offers 18 different options for term length offers. Policyholders looking for the most flexibility in how their coverage lasts won't find it with Haven Life.

Pricing

Haven Life is competitive with its pricing, coming in lower than many competitors. Obtaining quotes is also simple and straightforward, taking mere minutes to get premium estimates.

Non-Smoker Smoker
Cost $20.72/month $89.92/month

Alternatives to consider

If you want a life insurer who offers more coverage terms: AIG provides a choice of 18 different term lengths, compared with the five that Haven Life offers. But keep in mind, AIG has much lower customer service ratings than Haven Life, and doesn't provide term life policies without a medical exam.

Policy options

Unlike many competitors, HavenLife provides only term life insurance coverage. However, there are two different kinds of term policies available.

Haven Term

Haven Term provides up to $3 million in coverage as well as the option to choose a coverage term lasting 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 years. Policies are available nationwide for individuals up to 64 years old. Obtaining a policy will require submitting a detailed medical questionnaire, and in some cases, undergoing a medical exam.

Haven Simple

Haven Simple provides a 100% digital buying experience and no medical exam is required. This policy can be purchased by individuals between the ages of 20 and 55 but is not available in California, Delaware, South Dakota, North Dakota or New York. Coverage terms include 5, 10, 15, and 20 years.

Riders/add-ons

Riders provide additional benefits. Here are some of the types of add-on coverage options available through Haven Life.

Accelerated death benefit rider

This rider enables a policyholder who is terminally ill to obtain most of their death benefit before they pass in case the money is needed for medical or other expenses. Typically, policyholders expected to pass within 12 to 24 months will be eligible to begin accessing their death benefit if this rider is purchased.

Waiver of premium rider

With this rider, a policyholder who becomes totally disabled due to illness or injury will be able to suspend paying premiums while still keeping coverage intact. This rider can be purchased by policyholders under age 59.

HavenLife Plus

HavenLife Plus is a rider added to eligible term policies that provide access to other services. It's not available in certain states, including Florida, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Washington. It offers access to Trust & Will to help policyholders make an estate plan, Lantern to document end-of-life wishes, the Adaptive fitness app, and more. It also provides a 15% discount at CVS Minute Clinics.

Application process

One of the best features of Haven Life is how simple the site makes it to purchase insurance. Potential policyholders can get a quick online estimate of their rate by answering just a few simple questions, including whether they smoke and how they consider their health. In many cases, it is possible to complete the entire application process online with no in-person medical exam for those who are buying up to $500,000 coverage with Haven Simple.

Who is eligible for Haven Life insurance?

Haven Life makes it possible for individuals up to age 64 to buy up to $3 million in coverage with a standard term policy. This type of coverage often, but doesn't always, require a medical exam. And policyholders will need to provide detailed health information.

Haven Simple offers coverage to individuals between 20 and 55 years old with no medical exam. Up to $500,000 in coverage is available but policies cannot be sold via Haven Simple to residents of CA, DE, SD, ND, or NY.

Customer service and ratings

Haven Life is backed by MassMutual, which received top marks on J.D. Power's 2021 Individual Life Insurance Study. MassMutual received a rating of 782, compared with the industry average of 776. Its score far-exceeded low performers like Brighthouse Financial which received a score of just 714, and AIG which scored 729.

This life insurer is a good choice for:

Haven Life is best suited for people who:

  • Want simplified issue coverage with no medical exam
  • Prioritize customer service
  • Are interested in a streamlined online application

But you may want to consider State Farm if you'd prefer a company better known for customer service and that provides access to in-person agents, or AIG if you want more choices for term lengths.
