If you have a Chase card, Chase purchase protection will cover your eligible purchases. This kicks in when a new purchase is damaged or stolen. You can file a claim to get the item repaired, replaced, or reimbursed. It's one of many Chase credit card benefits you'll find, along with extended warranty coverage, return protection, price protection, and travel insurance.

All Chase credit cards have purchase protection, as it's one of the standard benefits. Only some Chase cards have those other coverages. In this guide, you'll learn what's covered, how to file a claim with the card issuer, and purchase protection limits for every Chase card.

Chase purchase protection: What's covered?

Chase purchase protection covers theft or damage to new retail purchases for 120 days after the purchase date. You must pay for the purchase, or at least a portion of it, with your Chase card or rewards from your Chase card. This means your credit card purchase protection also covers items paid for with Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

There are limits to how much Chase purchase protection pays for eligible claims. The maximum is either the amount you paid for the purchase with your Chase card or your Chase card's per-claim limit, whichever is less. For example, many Chase cards have a per-claim limit of $500. If you have one of those cards, then the purchase protection benefit will pay up to $500 on a single claim.

In addition, Chase cards have a separate total limit -- either per card account or per year. If the limit is per card account, that's the maximum purchase protection benefits you can receive with that Chase credit card.

What's not covered

There are many situations and purchase types that aren't covered by Chase purchase protection. Examples include:

  • Items that mysteriously disappear with no evidence of a wrongful act
  • Used and pre-owned items (refurbished items are covered if accompanied by a warranty)
  • Antiques and collectibles
  • Motorized vehicles including boats, automobiles, and aircraft, as well as their accessories
  • Computer software
  • Items purchased for resale, professional, or commercial use
  • Animals and living plants
  • Medical equipment
  • Perishable or consumable items, such as cosmetics, perfumes, and rechargeable batteries

If you want to know more about what is and isn't covered, review the guide that came with your Chase credit card.

If you're interested in getting a credit card that offers purchase protection, consider checking if you prequalify for a Chase credit card. Here are a few of our favorite Chase cards.

Chase's purchase protection limits are competitive with the best credit cards. That's particularly true with some of its higher-end cards that come with limits of $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account or per year.

How to file a claim

The fastest way to submit a Chase purchase protection claim is through its online claims center, eClaimsline. You can also call 1-888-320-9656. Note that certain Chase credit cards have different purchase protection claim phone lines. You may want to check the guide to benefits for your specific Chase card to see if there's another phone number available.

You must notify the benefit administrator online or by phone within 90 days of the damage or theft. If you don't, your claim may be denied.

Once you've done that, you'll receive claim forms. The benefit administrator will also tell you what other documentation is required. You may need the following documents:

  • Credit card statement showing the last four digits of your card number and the purchase related to the claim
  • Repair estimates or invoice if the item is repairable
  • Copy of a police report (which must have been made within 48 hours of the loss for theft claims), fire report, or other incident report made for the loss of the item

Submit the claim forms and any required documents within 120 days of the damage or theft.

Chase purchase protection is a cardholder perk you hope you never need to use. But if something you buy is damaged or stolen, you'll be happy the credit card company offers this feature. It's also nice to have peace of mind that your new purchases are covered.

Choosing a credit card

FAQs

  • Chase purchase protection covers eligible new purchases in the event of damage or theft. If either of those occur to an eligible purchase, you can file a claim to get it repaired, replaced, or reimbursed. This protection lasts for 120 days from the purchase date.

  • Not all purchases made with a Chase card are covered by purchase protection. Certain types of items, such as used products, collectibles, motorized vehicles, and products purchased for professional use, aren't eligible. Purchases that vanish with no evidence of wrongdoing also won't be covered.

You'll find a longer list of purchases that aren't covered in the benefits guide that comes with each Chase credit card.

  • To file a Chase purchase protection claim, go to the credit card issuer's online claims center. Click "New Claim" to start the claim process. If you'd rather file a claim over the phone, you can call 1-888-320-9656.
