A garage sale can be a great way to make some extra cash and declutter the house while you're at it. But garage sales aren't easy. And if you want to make sure yours is successful, you're going to have to put in the work.
Are you planning a yard sale in the near future? Try these tips to make sure it's a good one.
1. Get creative with your marketing
Putting signs around the neighborhood is one thing, but if you really want a lot of traffic, you'll need to go beyond that. Consider listing your garage sale on social media, Craigslist, the Nextdoor app, your local newspaper, and more. You could even send out postcards around the neighborhood.
2. Pre-price your items
Label your items with prices ahead of time. This cuts down on the haggling -- and the time and hassle that comes with it. It also makes checking out faster.
3. Bring in the neighbors
Ask your neighbors if they want to join in the fun. You'll have more items to sell, and you'll have a bigger network of potential shoppers to tap, too.
4. Keep your cool
Try not to hover over shoppers. Sit back as they browse, and avoid making people feel pressured or stressed. They'll be more likely to buy if they're at ease and enjoying themselves.
5. Make sure everything is on display
Everything you're selling should be out and easy to see. Don't make shoppers dig through boxes or piles of items.
6. Consider bundling items
If you have items that go together or share a similar theme, consider selling bundles. Sell that old Super Nintendo and the 10 games you have left as one big package, or think about bundling all your coats or children's clothing of a like-size together. It will help you sell more of your items -- and hopefully make more money, too.
7. Run sales as you get toward the end of the day
If you're getting to the end of your sale, then it's time to re-strategize. Start marking items down or offering discounts on certain tables or racks. Selling them at a reduced price is better than having to throw or give items away.
8. Make sure you're in compliance
Don't forget to make sure you're in line with any community or homeowners association (HOA) rules. Many have rules pertaining to yard sales, so contact your local HOA board or community association just to be safe.
