The technology sector warning du jour was Compaq's caution about a possible softening of demand for some of their products. In response, virtually all stocks having anything to do with computing took it in the ear again today, as the NASDAQ fell the equivalent of 70 Dow points.

Despite that, the Borefolio tech holdings actually fared reasonably well in today's punch-out. Both Lam Research and Kulicke & Soffa were staggering around the ring for most of the day. But Lam managed to fight back in the late rounds and was down only 1/4 point at the final bell. KLIC recovered from a vicious pummeling and actually managed to emerge victorious today: up 3/4 to close at 21 bucks, bid.

In the event held over at the NYSE, three of our four entrants won their matches today. Still glowing from yesterday's favorable treatment in a special section of the Wall Street Journal, Green Tree Financial gained 7/8 to close at 32 1/2. Texas Industries, known as "Rocky" to its many friends, continued its quest for the Borefolio crown, gaining another 1/4 to close at $62 on the bid side. And the "Saskatoon Smasher," (Potash Corp.), dusted the ring with anyone who got in the way, picking up 1 3/8.

The only loser in today's NYSE event was newcomer Borders Group. Borders lost a quarter-point but vowed to spend the week-end sparring with Giggles the Clown over at the new bookstore in Pleasanton, Calif., in preparation for next week's contests. Bor-DERS! Bor-DERS!
