ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Jan. 28, 1998) -- Technology issues led U.S. markets higher today. The Nasdaq roared ahead more than 2%. The S&P 500 gained 0.87%.
The Boring Portfolio, being partly invested in technology issues, partly in other stuff (air transport, book retailing, wheels and roofing supplies, real estate) and partly in cash, split the difference, tacking on a solid 1.34%.
On such a good day, one might expect lots of cheering about Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO), leaping $2 5/8 to hit a new high, or Carlisle Companies (NYSE: CSL), pushing ahead $1 1/4, or Andrew Corp. (Nasdaq: ANDW), continuing its impressive Borefolio debut with a $1 15/16 gain.
But in the words of former President George Herbert Walker Bush, "Nah guh hap'n."
Instead, I offer you on the eve of the Borefolio's second anniversary, its shortest nightly recap ever. After sleeping on it, I've decided to sell the Borefolio's investments in Green Tree Financial (NYSE: GNT) and Tidewater (NYSE: TDW).

This may not be the end of it, either. Stuff that we decide doesn't belong in a Boring Portfolio is getting tossed. New stuff -- including stocks recommended by some of you in the past couple of weeks -- goes in.
That's it. After a weekend in the Arizona desert, the Bore is tanned, rested, and ready to take another whack at getting this portfolio back to a respectable performance level.
