Shares of Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (ERIC +11.79%) opened Thursday's trading 11.3% higher, boosted by a strong earnings report. The telecom equipment maker's stock backed down slightly from that early peak, but remained 8.2% above Wednesday's closing price as of 1:12 p.m. ET.

Beating a gloomy forecast
The average Wall Street analyst expected significantly lower Q3 earnings and revenues on a year-over-year basis. Top-line sales were projected to fall 1% to 55.3 billion Swedish crowns (SEK). On the bottom line, the Street target of 1.55 SEK per share sat 33% below the year-ago figure.
Ericsson's reported results weren't exactly thrilling on their own, but they outpaced analyst targets across the board. Earnings fell 24% to 1.77 SEK per share while revenues increased 5.9% to 59.5 billion SEK.
Today's jump didn't quite make up for the bearish market reaction to the Q2 report. Ericsson's stock still trades 10% below the pre-Q2 report level.

Storm clouds over 2027
The relatively robust financial results might not last. On the earnings call, recently appointed Ericsson CEO Per Narvinger noted that the key market for Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment is experiencing flat demand while component costs are rising. The company is taking both tactical and structural action to overcome these challenges, but investors shouldn't expect quick results.
"Many customer contracts are multiyear, so structural mitigations will take time to flow through," Narvinger said.
Enjoy the pop, but don't mistake it for a turnaround. Narvinger is already calling 2027 a "transition period," which is CEO-speak for "bumpy." The real test comes when those price hikes start working their way through a mountain of multiyear contracts.
