Republic Wireless recently started offering "unlimited" data, text, and phone calls for $20 per month, far undercutting similar plans from larger wireless companies. While the offer sounds compelling, it also requires users to remain on their Wi-Fi networks a set percent of usage. While such an offer might only appeal to a small subset of users, it highlights a broader trend of software gaining increasing leverage to circumvent the traditional wireless model of charging separately for voice, data, and text messaging. That could spell hard times ahead for the wireless industry.
