A $1 billion box office for “Iron Man 3” isn’t out of the question.

For all his success, Robert Downey Jr., as Iron Man, has never proven to be as popular as either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield, both of whom have played Spider-Man on the big screen. All that could change when Iron Man 3 debuts on May 3.

The film could follow in the footsteps of Marvel's The Avengers, and bring Walt Disney (DIS -0.96%) another billion-dollar box office, says Tim Beyers of Motley Fool Rule Breakers and Motley Fool Supernova in the following video.

Sony's (SONY -0.72%) best performance from a Spidey film came in 2007, when Sam Raimi's  Spider-Man 3 earned $90.9 million worldwide, according to data supplied by Box Office Mojo.

Do you agree that Iron Man 3 will top that total? Please watch, and then leave a comment to let us know what you think of Disney's plans to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
