Look at CBS (CBS +0.00%), which allows for streaming recent episodes of its popular shows in exchange for sitting through ads. The experience effectively duplicates the couch potato experience for users who, in using a smartphone or tablet to watch, have already expressed a desire for something different, Tim says.
And yet, the problems don't end there. While Time Warner's (TWX +0.00%) CW network only offers streaming, CBS allows viewers to purchase episodes -- but only through an app store, which means handing revenue to the major device suppliers.
