ANN ARBOR, MI, April 10, 1996 -- The Boring Portfolio managed to beat the market averages for the second straight day, with help from four of the six current holdings.
Green Tree Financial (the subject of last night's Boring update) and LCS Industries both arrested their recent slides. Prime Medical Services continued its ascent into uncharted territory. And Border's put in a good showing with the help of some positive news today.
On the down side, Texas Industries lost $1 1/2, probably owing to a Wall Street Journal story about slowing earnings at many steel producers -- although Chaparral Steel, 81% owned by TXI, was notably absent from the story's hit list. Lam Research continued its "up one day, own the next" thing with which we've become accustomed, if not exactly delighted.
Regarding Border's, the news today was the announcement of simultaneous grand openings this coming Friday of three new superstores: in Evanston, IL, Bangor, ME, and Dallas, TX. If you're near any of these three lovely areas, I suggest that you check it out and let us all know what you discover. Also, it was reported today that late last month Border's President George Mrkonic bought 13,500 shares of BGP -- a nice $375,000 investment to celebrate the vernal equinox, I presume. Apparently, Mr. Mrkonic does not believe that BGP is expensive at current prices; and neither do I.
As for PMSI, I see no news to account for its climb into the $14 range on enormous volume today. Presumably, this is more institutional buying, now that the stock has hit the fund managers' radar screens after clearing the $10 mark recently.
One last note: Tomorrow evening, I plan to review a new stock for acquisition into the ol' Borefolio. So please do click on back in!
