Boring Portfolio Report
Thursday, May 16, 1996

(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
by Greg Markus (MF Boring)

ANN ARBOR, MI, May 16, 1996 -- The S&P closed imperceptibly lower on Thursday, the NASDAQ rose imperceptibly higher, and the Boring Portfolio split the difference, gaining in value barely enough to buy one of those octopi that will decorate the ice tonight at "The Joe," as the winningest team in the NHL goes do-or-die against some expansion club from Zoltek-ville.

Happily, almost nothing happened on this yawner of a day for the market, so I can wrap up tonight's Borefolio recap pronto and flip on the tube. Green Tree Financial, Texas Industries, and Prime Medical lost a few cents each. Lam Research recovered a dollar of yesterday's loss. Borders Group gained two-bits. Shaw Group and LCSI: "unch."

The only news of the day came from Borders. Borders must belong to the Bookstore-of-the-Month Club. Every few weeks or so, they announce another new superstore. Today's selections were Tampa, Florida, and Columbus, Ohio.

According to the press release, the 25,000 square-foot store in Tampa is slated to open this fall at Dale Mabry & Stall. It will be the eighth Borders in Florida. As for the Columbus store, it will be the seventh Borders in Ohio and will cover 27,500 square-feet in the Northwest Square Shopping Center. (Presumably the extra space is to accommodate a selection of those oversized coloring books that Buckeyes love so much.)

As for Border's chief competitor, Barnes & Noble -- well, they also issued some news today. According to the Reuters wire, B & N reported "its losses grew slightly in the first quarter despite a runup in sales, especially at its superstores."

I'll stick with Borders.

One last news item: I understand that David Gardner, ol' Motley Fool himself, hits the big three-oh today. Happy birthday, David! By the way, did you know what symbol reporters use to signify that a story is finished and there's absolutely nothing left to follow? "30"

Hey, game's gonna start. Gotta go.
