ANN ARBOR, Mich. (May 22, 1997) -- Can you tell there's a holiday week-end coming up? Major market averages closed lower Thursday in a generally uneventful session. The Dow and S&P 500 each lost about 0.4%, while the Nasdaq shed a single point (-0.1%).
The Boring Portfolio dipped a quarter of a percentage point with losing stocks outnumbering winners five to three. BORDERS GROUP (NYSE: BGP) finished unchanged.
TIDEWATER edged up $1/4. The company's board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.15, unchanged from its past level. That works out to around a 1.4% annual yield based on the current share price.
Financial stocks continued soft today as the yield on the long bond inched upward to 6.98%. GREEN TREE FINANCIAL (NYSE: GNT) lost a dollar to close at $33 3/8.
PRIME MEDICAL SERVICES (Nasdaq: PMSI) extended its stealth recovery, tacking on a quarter-point to close at a bid of $11 1/8. Newcomers to the Boring Portfolio may not be aware that Prime is the leading provider of lithotripsy services in the U.S. for the treatment of kidney stones. The company also recently finalized a joint venture with EDAP Technomed, Inc. to establish mobile routes for the treatment of benign prostate enlargement using EDAP's Prostatron device.
And that, my friends, is pretty much all I have to offer today. Other than a perfunctory press release on Tidewater's dividend, there was not a single news item on an Boring stocks today. Not even a techno-note from the public relations mills at CISCO SYSTEMS (Nasdaq: CSCO) or ORACLE (Nasdaq: ORCL). Not a peep.
Nothing's changed. The stocks are all fine. The weather is great, and there's a long week-end in our sights.
I could fill tonight's recap with a bit of patter about how I spent my day, but to tell you the truth I spent a good chunk of the afternoon turning the compost heap in the back yard. And other than reporting that I'm the proud beneficiary of eight wheelbarrows-full of primo black dirt -- all for free -- I can't think of anything to say on that topic.
Tomorrow could prove to be among the half-dozen slowest trading days of the year.
Boring is ready.
