ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Sept. 4, 1997) -- The market closed mixed on Thursday, with the Dow off 27 points (-0.35%) but the S&P 500 and Nasdaq pushing ahead by 0.33% and 0.40%, respectively.
The Boring Portfolio basically treaded water, losing about $65, or 0.09%. Borefolio holdings were up and down -- mostly down -- fractionally on your basic no-news, snoozer of a day.
PRIME MEDICAL (NASDAQ: PMSI) continues strong. PMSI picked up $3/8 on the bid, with a quarter-million shares changing hands ... or computer terminals, or something -- even if sometimes only from one market-maker's to another, Nasdaq-style.
I spotted no Prime news, but I did notice that Lehman Brothers started coverage of EDAP (Nasdaq: EDAPY) with a "buy" today. EDAP, as many of us have learned recently, makes the Prostatron gizmo that Prime's fixin' to haul out onto the highway in a few months, nukin' prostates and rakin' in the bucks.
As I understand it, Lehman handled EDAP's IPO last month, so they're not exactly disinterested bystanders in recommending the stock. Whatever.
ORACLE (Nasdaq: ORCL) gained $1/2 in moderate trading. Sensei Larry's company will post results for its fiscal first quarter on Tuesday, Sept. 16, after the close of trading, with a conference call to follow.
The August quarter is typically a slo-w-w-w one for Oracle, but it may provide an early indication of market acceptance for Oracle8 and some of the company's new apps. According to First Call, the consensus forecast of 26 analysts who cover Oracle is for earnings of $0.15 per share. That would represent a 36% advance over last year's $0.11.
The Borefolio's other Silicon Valley holding, CISCO SYSTEMS (Nasdaq: CSCO) eased $7/16 on the bid despite a favorable mention by Peter Lynch on CNBC. While channel-surfing on my lunch break, I happened to spot Lynch plugging his new CD-ROM on investing. Looks cool, but I'm waiting for The Motley Fool version ... right, guys?
Yesterday, SPRINT (NYSE: FON) announced they will be one of the early users of Cisco's zippy new Model 12,000 Gigabit Switch Router (GSR -- formerly BFR, but cleaned up for prime time). With GSRs girding its backbone, Sprint says they'll have the world's first OC-12 packet-over-SONET (POS) Internet network.
As I consult my network cheat-sheet, I see that OC-12 translates into 622 Mbps, which is, like, muy rapido. Of course, whether all those electrons surging through Candy Bergen's fiber-optic firehose will ultimately show up any sooner at my desktop remains to be seen. But they tell me they're working on it. Meantime, it's the World Wide Wait at a leisurely 33.6 Kbps for Boring.
