Fool Portfolio Report
Friday, December 8, 1995
A strong NASDAQ rise on the final day of the week left the Fool in the dust, Friday, though our portfolio did have a victorious week. In fact, looking back, it was an amazingly volatile five days. Check out our daily returns:
Monday: +3.43%Tuesday: +2.76%
Wednesday: +1.95%
Thursday: -2.64%
Friday: -1.22%
That 1.95% rise on Wednesday put us into the much-coveted 100% total return territory (trivia fans, our top was officially 102.89%), but we then fumbled the ball away a day later and finished the week in ignominy due to an Iomega drop.
Iomega, newsless the whole week, nevertheless bumped around worse than the kid on the back of the bus. The stock touched a high of $53 3/4 during the week, but sold off Thursday and Friday, losing another $3 1/2 today to close bidding $47 7/8. Nevertheless, its 216% total return is well ahead of the 200% mark, which spells T-H-R-E-E B-A-G-S. And it was up $6 3/4 for the week, to pace The Fool Port.
Interestingly, Iomega did receive brief mention today on CNBC from the lips of, DUM-DUM-DUM DAH! (that's Beethoven's Fifth), DAN DORFMAN. But don't worry, dear reader. . . Dan was not touting our company. Actually, he was mentioning it in connection with Emerald Research, the investment firm that recommended Iomega several months ago. A recent Emerald pick, SubMicron Systems (NASDAQ:SUBM), was the subject of the Dorfman Report today, and Dan cited some of Emerald's other "shining stars," including Iomega. For the record, as ParlayPaul points out in our ever-active Iomega message folder, Dan pronounced it "Eye-oh-MEEEG-uh."
Say. . . is that Chevron lurking near new high territory? The massive oil driller was up another $11/16 Friday, to close the week bidding $51 3/16. Dow Jones reported that Chevron's Tengiz oil field, located in Kazakhstan (one of the old USSR's former constituents, and now an independent republic), was producing 80,000 barrels a day, a new peak (and up 23% from last month). Chevron actually owns 50% of this HUGE oil field, which is reputed to have overall production potential of 700,000 barrels a day. Chevron has invested more than a billion dollars to date in its Tengiz operations, though it cut more ambitious production plans earlier this year because of the difficulty of getting oil transported out of Kazakhstan. However, Russia and Kazakhstan, noting the powerful financial potential of increasing distribution, held high-level talks last month to build a $1.3-billion, 1,440-kilometer pipeline to carry production from the Tengiz field to Western markets.
Chevron is picking up for the Fool Port, though it's still only up a lousy 4% since our August purchase. It has been dramatically outperformed by our General Electric shares, purchased on the same day (per our Dow Dividend Approach), and now up 21%. GE also hit a new high this week.
Friday was a good one for both Applied Materials and KLA Instruments, both of which still underperformed the market this week. AMAT rose $1 1/2 to $45 3/4, and KLAC picked up $2 1/4 to $35. They remain, however, our worst two stocks.
Just a reminder that we update our Fool Graph every Friday. It's that button up there in the right corner of this window, and you can click it to see a graphical representation of the history of our portfolio's return to date. This week's graph is now up!
And on that note, Fool on!
