Fool Portfolio Report
Wednesday, December 27, 1995

Generally a ho-hum day on the market today: S&P 500 up 0.04%, NASDAQ down 0.12%. . . and

SPLAT.

The Fool brought up the rear again today, falling 0.67%. The Gap (NYSE:GPS) fought valiantly, rowing its dory forward $1 3/4---regaining all of yesterday's losses---but the rest of our stocks took in water, plankton, half a tennis ball and a hubcap. Oh fair , Chesapeake, how long until you're restored!?

America Online dropped $1, and our semiconductor stocks each pushed farther out and back from our cost bases. Ugh. Even General Electric---in the wake of its $960 million buyout of AON---gave back $5/8. We did sneak $1/8 in profits from Iomega, but as it was up $1 1/2 earlier in the day and looked to be heading for $50, we can't much celebrate that. We'll just have to chalk up December 27, 1995 as one more reason to invest for the long-haul. If you're not growing your portfolio today, dream about the tomorrows. Maybe The Fool will come up for some air tomorrow, as we begin to get all this tax-selling out of the way.

WEEK IN REVIEW, PART II

Tonight we celebrate a long-time contributor in Fooldom, Huibs pht. He probably needs no introduction. If you're like me, you've been "huibsed" on more than one recent occasion. For those newcomers, Huibs is really The Fool's Fool, an investor who digs out small comedies in every corner of this site. . . and we imagine he does much the same in his life beyond Fooldom. (Life. . . beyond Fooldom?)

Let's review a couple "pht" masterpieces over the past year, which I located on a few-hour search this afternoon---to be broadcast on Discovery Channel in late 1996. Take a look back:

Now when you actually review specifically and broadly what Huibs' is doing in the forum, it's spectacular. Take, for example, the last post: Dynamic Oil of Vancouver. A sure-thing buyout. Trading at $1 1/2. Huibsed. The stock is trading at $5/8 today, off 58%.

The preceding post, another dollar-stock, and a post that didn't take terribly much thought. Huibsed.

And the first post, well, Fools have heard the howling of bears chasing America Online up the tree for a year-and-a-half now. We're not going to get up on the lime crate again and preach against shorting open situations: new markets, rapid sales growth, strong brandname, remarkable 3-year performance. We'll let Huibs clarify.

My personal favorite came in a Critiques & Suggestions post and response that has since faded out of the Graveyard. Recently we found that America Online sets a time period for folder; after a certain period of time, if there are no new posts, sayonara. We lost a load of Graveyard folders. [This problem has since been remedied.] So I have to paraphrase the exchange as best I remember it.

I'M A BROKER AT ONE OF THE NATION'S BIG FIRMS, AND I'LL SAY THAT WHAT YOU GUYS ARE MISSING IS THAT MY CLIENTS, THE CUSTOMERS I SERVE, DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT INVESTING. AND DON'T CARE. FOR EXAMPLE, I TELL THEM OVER AND AGAIN: THE STOCK MARKET DOESN'T CARE WHAT YOU BOUGHT YOUR SHARES AT. THE GOING PRICE IS ALL THAT MATTERS.

YET MY CLIENTS DEMAND TO HOLD ONTO THEIR LOSERS. I KEEP PUSHING THEM TO ASK THEMSELVES WHY THEY OWN THE STOCK.

WHY DO YOU OWN THIS STOCK?

THEY HAVE NO CLUE. AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE UP AGAINST.

Uhhh... 'cause you sold it to me?

Finally, lest you think Fools never get Huibsed, consider this post put up in the America Online folder, in response to the article on America Online (with a bit of Foolishness) in the most recent issue of the NY Times Sunday Magazine. As it's an ugly cheapshot, I won't edit out the grammatical errors:

V. AOL FOLDER: ON BALDNESS

...Hey GREAT artical on AOL in this sudays NYTimes magazine section... (I get it on saturday as a subscriber)...I do note, however, that the picture of the Motley Bros has Both of them donning Foolish headwear...

...perhaps we're covering something up??..or should I say, the LACK of something??...

great holiday folks!!

..huibs..

That's just ugly. The guy makes fun of penny-stock hype and baldness as if they were siblings. Ouch.

Huibs pht, thanks for helping everyone in the forum to keep things in perspective. I hope there won't be anymore "How does a split work?" questions, and we're glad to have you back from the dead. Please also be careful with the coffee over your keyboard.

We're looking gleefully forward to 1996, and one of the reasons is because we don't think there's a better place to learn about investing and to be entertained than in Fooldom. Fools hold that education and entertainment should as often as possible be linked together. And Huibs has set the standard: raucous and intelligent Foolishness.

Thank you.
