Artificial intelligence is a revolutionary technology, and the energy demands behind it are skyrocketing. As hyperscalers scramble for a stable energy source, nuclear is stealing the spotlight. This surge in interest has sparked a nuclear renaissance, igniting competition between start-ups and established miners and refiners.
In one corner, you have Oklo (OKLO -8.12%), an upstart developer of advanced nuclear reactors and the fuel needed to power them. In the other, you have Uranium Energy Corporation (UEC +1.07%), a domestic uranium miner that supplies the raw materials needed to meet today's energy needs. Oklo has ambitious plans to recycle used nuclear waste
Oklo aims to revolutionize nuclear energy and its deployment with its Aurora powerhouses. These function as mini nuclear power plants that use compact, liquid-metal-cooled fast reactors. Unlike traditional nuclear plants, these microreactors are factory-fabricated and are designed to run on spent fissile material from conventinal reactors.
Oklo believes it can harness fast neutrons to unlock the 95% of energy potential still trapped in used nuclear fuel. The nuclear developer plans to build a commercial fuel recycling facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to establish a commercial pathway for recovering selected materials from used nuclear fuel.

The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Standard Nuclear, a producer of TRISO nuclear fuel, to collaborate on recycling and manufacturing nuclear fuel.
In May, Oklo was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for advanced negotiations under the Surplus Plutonium Utilization Program, which makes designated surplus plutonium available to private industry for conversion into fuel under strict requirements.
Uranium Energy is a U.S.-based uranium miner and processor with active operations
In contrast, Uranium Energy Corporation is positioned at the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle. The company is a U.S.-based uranium miner that uses in situ recovery (ISR), a low-impact mining method that uses oxygenated groundwater to dissolve uranium underground and then pumps it to the surface.
Uranium Energy uses a "hub-and-spoke" platform, meaning it operates processing plants that serve as central hubs for processing material extracted from multiple nearby mining sites (the spokes). The company currently controls two active ISR central processing production platforms in the U.S., in Wyoming and Texas.

These hubs serve satellite deposits, giving UEC a licensed production capacity of roughly 12 million pounds of yellowcake (the concentrated uranium powder extracted from natural ore, the starting point for nuclear reactor fuel) per year.
Which uranium fuel play wins in 2026?
Oklo is spending large sums of cash on advanced reactors that will not generate revenue for years, and it hopes to begin producing fuel at its Tennessee facility for Aurora reactors by the early 2030s. In the meantime, it has signed a letter of intent with Centrus Energy for high-assay low-enriched uranium starting around 2029.
In contrast, Uranium Energy Corporation has mining and refining operations and can sell yellowcake directly into uranium markets today. On top of this, it is 100% unhedged, giving it maximum price exposure whenever uranium prices rise. When it comes to the better nuclear fuel play for 2026, Uranium Energy Corporation takes the crown.
