Better-than-expected quarterly profitability was the engine driving Danaher (DHR +0.33%) stock higher on Tuesday. Cheered by the company's estimates-beating results, investors piled into the healthcare conglomerate's equity, and the stock closed the day more than 4% higher.
Healthy improvements
Danaher's total sales in its third quarter amounted to $6.55 billion, up 8% from the year-ago period. Net income under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) rose more steeply, growing by 36% to over $1.2 billion. On a non-GAAP (adjusted), per-share basis, net income advanced by 12% to $2.11.
Profitability was boosted by two discrete items: a tariff refund that added $0.06 per share to adjusted profitability, and a $263 million tax settlement and reserve release that padded GAAP net income.

Danaher's top-line figure was basically in line with the consensus analyst estimate. Those prognosticators expected $1.92 per share in adjusted net profit.
In its earnings release, the company attributed its gains to "continued acceleration" in its core businesses, with the exception of its seasonal respiratory diagnostics products.

Earnings guidance lifted
Compounding that strong earnings beat, Danaher raised its profitability guidance for the entirety of 2026. Management now expects adjusted earnings per share (EPS) to land at $8.57 to $8.62, up from its previous projection of $8.45 to $8.60. It left its adjusted core revenue growth forecast unchanged, at 4% to 5% over the 2025 figure.
Recently, Danaher -- always something of a conglomerate in transition -- finalized a portfolio adjustment process. This has resulted in a leaner, more effective collection of productive assets. The third-quarter sales growth and the confident earnings guidance raise indicate that the strategy is not only working but can continue to drive future improvements. I'm not surprised that investors piled into the stock after earnings.
