On Thursday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that BMW has issued a recall of model year 2009-2012 X5 xDrive 35d SAV diesel vehicles manufactured between Sept. 1, 2008, and Nov. 15, 2012. The recall concerns the engine belt idler pulley bolt, that "could loosen and break over time," potentially causing power steering in the vehicle to fail.

As many as 29,800 vehicles could be affected by the recall in the U.S. alone. Globally, the size of the recall is expected to reach nearly 250,000, according to the AP.

BMW says it will begin notifying owners of the recall next month, and dealers will fix the defect by replacing and tightening the idler pulley bolt. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected] for more information.
