We're now just days away from Apple's (AAPL 0.51%) iPad Air launch, and early reviews from the broader tech press are starting to roll in. The general consensus is that Apple has a winner with the iPad Air, as it fundamentally improves all three of the areas that Apple values most: thinness, lightness, and battery life. That sounds simple, but in reality most competitors have trouble improving all three simultaneously since there are inherent tradeoffs in achieving those goals.

AllThingsD calls the iPad Air the best tablet on the market, even though it has a premium price point. AnandTech's Anand Lal Shimpi never thought he'd be interested in the full-sized model again -- until now. Engadget believes that Apple "nailed it," while TechCrunch agrees that big tablets are relevant again. The iPad Air will undoubtedly reinvigorate demand within the full-sized segment, much to the glee of investors. Consumers have begun to shift spending to smaller form factors, but some of those dollars might be coming back to the larger devices.

In this segment of Tech Teardown, Erin Kennedy discusses Apple's new iPad Air with Evan Niu, CFA, our tech and telecom bureau chief.
