Microsoft (MSFT -1.84%) met Sony's (SONY 0.37%) challenge over the weekend. The software giant announced sales of more than 1 million Xbox One gaming consoles within the first day of launch. At first blush, that appears to be the exact same feat that Sony accomplished a week earlier with the PlayStation 4. But that's not the whole story.

In the video below, Fool contributor Demitrios Kalogeropoulos digs a bit deeper into the launch figures, pointing out that the Xbox One's debut benefited from a wider release. That suggests the PS4 will do even better as it becomes available in more areas. Still, Microsoft logged a bigger result in overall revenue, as its device carries a 25% higher retail price. The takeaway, Demitrios argues, is that the healthy launch figures are great news for both companies, and also good news for GameStop (GME 0.10%), which is poised to benefit from a growing video game industry.
