Although it may seem like a novelty, 3D Systems (DDD -1.15%) has been hard at work trying to become a leading player in the 3-D printed food space. Last September, 3D Systems acquired The Sugar Lab, a start-up focused on creating customized 3-D printed sugar sculptures, and the company will release two upcoming sugar 3-D printers later this year, the ChefJet and ChefJet Pro, as a result of the acquisition. According to Liz von Hasseln, creative food director of 3D Systems and co-founder of The Sugar Lab, the initial response to the ChefJet and ChefJet Pro has been extremely positive, and the company may have underestimated the extent to which people have been primed to embrace 3-D printed food.

In the following video, 3-D printing specialist Steve Heller caught up with Liz von Hasseln at the Inside 3D Printing Conference in New York to ask how the response to 3-D printed food has been faring for 3D Systems. Going forward, 3D Systems investors should look forward to the upcoming release of the ChefJet and ChefJet Pro to assess whether strong interest will translate into strong sales.
