Guthart has been Intuitive Surgical's CEO since January 2010 and before that served as the company's president and chief operating officer. He started at Intuitive back in 1996, shortly after the company was founded. He also serves on the board of directors of Affymetrix (Nasdaq: AFFX).

Since going public in the summer of 2000, Intuitive Surgical has thrashed the market, returning more than 1,700% to early investors. Through its da Vinci brand, the company is a pioneer in robot-assisted surgery. It not only sells the robots themselves, it also has a razor-and-blades model in which it sells instruments, accessories, and annual service agreements to maintain the machines.
