TEMPE, Arizona (June 8, 1998) -- U.S. equities extended Friday's gains on Monday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq rising 0.17% and 0.27%, respectively. The Boring Portfolio gained ground as well, picking up 0.25%. That gain includes 0.13% in accumulated interest and dividends from last month.
Shares of Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO) rose $1/8 to a bid of $77 1/2. As yet another indication that it is moving rapidly beyond its leadership position in data networking to capitalize upon the integration of voice, video, and data communications, Cisco introduced Monday a new product that makes it easier for phone companies to handle surging Internet traffic.
The Cisco Signaling Controller 2200 automatically recognizes data traffic and enables telcos to offload it from their voice switches and onto the Internet. The new device helps telcos reduce their operating costs and improve efficiencies by pulling traffic that does not require "nailed-up" connections off their heavily used switched circuits.
Cisco said its Signal Controller 2200 is already being used in several customers' networks, including Hong Kong Telecom and Germany's VossNet.
Cisco also introduced a new high-density (T3) interface card for its AS5800 universal access server and a T3 multiplexer for the Cisco AccessPath device.
The rapidly unfolding story of Cisco's move into the world of the giant telecommunications companies could take a dramatic turn as early as this week. The New York Times reported that Cisco's chairman John Chambers is "bent on concluding an alliance with Northern Telecom (NYSE: NT), which could take advantage of its strengths in sales and service in the telephone industry."
The Borefolio's other communications-oriented investment, Andrew Corp. (Nasdaq: ANDW), issued some news of its own Friday. Andrew is supplying and installing a major broadcast system in Colombia. The first phase of the system for RCN-TV consists of an uplink hub in Bogota and 20 remote receiver sites covering Colombia's main cities. RCN-TV plans 114 more sites before the end of the year 2000.
RCN-TV intends to have the new installation up and ready in time to cover the Colombian soccer team's matches in the '98 World Cup tournament. Andrew's stock closed Monday at $21 1/4, up $3/16.
Elsewhere in the Borefolio, shares of Atlas Air (NYSE: CGO) ascended $1 11/16 to $35 5/16 in above-average trading activity following the company's annual shareholder meeting last week. I have a call in to Atlas, and as soon as I learn anything, I'll pass it along.
