Earnings ahead!
...resting up on a slow news day.
(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
by Greg Markus (TMF Boring)
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (July 8, 1998) -- Despite weakness in so-called Internet stocks, the Nasdaq roared ahead 1.43% to establish a new high Wednesday. The S&P 500 gained 1.01% to set its own new record.
The Boring Portfolio rose a more modest 0.67% -- not a new high by any means but enough to bring July's gains to date to +3.16% -- better than either of the benchmark indices.
Despite all the rockin' and rollin' in the market, there was not a lick of news today on any Borefolio holdings -- that is, if you discount (as I do) various stories comparing the market capitalization of online bookseller and Foolfolio holding Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) to those of its more senior competitors, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) and our own Borders Group (NYSE: BGP).
Borders shares quietly rose $1/2 to $38 5/8.
Tuesday's Boring recap included a summary of my conversation with the lead guy responsible for developing Borders.com, Borders senior vice president of e-commerce and fulfillment Rick Vanzura. If you missed it and have an interest in Borders or in e-commerce generally, I invite you to click back to it.
Another place worth clicking over to is Ben Heskett's story about the latest developments at Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO). Heskett writes for CNET's (Nasdaq: CNWK) News.com, and I've learned a good deal from his periodic updates on Cisco and the networking industry.
This week, Heskett covers a topic much on my mind and one that's been discussed a good deal in this column and in the Cisco section of The Motley Fool's community area on America Online (NYSE: AOL) and the Web -- namely, Cisco's entry into the world of voice communications.
Actually, as Heskett points out, folks at Cisco insist that it's less of case of Cisco entering a new market than it is one of the market coming to Cisco. They've got a point. After all, the world is transitioning from "legacy" circuit-switched telephony to The Kid's own turf of packet-switched communications.
With little else to report today, I hope to make the most of what's left of a fine summer evening... and rest up for when the deluge of quarterly earnings begins to wash over the Borefolio next week.
So far, I know that we've got Andrew Corp. (Nasdaq: ANDW) and Pentair (NYSE: PNR) reporting on Thursday, July 16. Carlisle Companies (NYSE: CSL) typically releases its second quarter results around then, as well -- although I have no firm date for their report as of yet. Atlas Air (NYSE: CGO) will probably be winging in right behind that group, and FelCor (NYSE: FCH), too.
Busy, busy.
