Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Acme Packet (Nasdaq: APKT) were up 10% today on high trading volume.

So what: Investors came back from their holiday vacations and started making big bets in tech today, helping push Acme Packet higher. With three hours of trading left, the number of the company's shares traded already equaled as many shares as an average day.

Now what: The communications technology company did announce it would be releasing earnings on Feb. 1, but the move today isn't driven by any substantial news. This Motley Fool Rule Breakers pick does have some strong earnings momentum, and its stock rose nearly 400% last year. That said, I would prefer to see good news before a move like this today, so I'll take a little more time to let the new year come into focus before jumping in with both feet.
