Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Universal Display (Nasdaq: PANL) are lighting up today, popping by as much as 17% on heavy volume, on speculation that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) may be interested in incorporating OLED technology into future iPhones.

So what: While there's no official news from either end, a recent patent application from Cupertino is what's sparked this recent bout of hope among Universal Display investors. The patent is titled "Power Efficient Organic Light Emitting Diode Display," and outlines methods to improve battery life.

Now what: One of the main reasons the technology hasn't been in iPhones has always been OLED shortages, which would make it tough to fill Apple's tall orders. As one of the largest holders of intellectual property surrounding OLED technology, Universal Display would be ecstatic if Apple opted to use OLED alongside Samsung. While OLEDs are unlikely to make it into iPhones anytime soon, if at all, the patent application provides evidence that Apple is considering it down the road.
