On Thursday, Research in Motion (BB -1.04%) announced  that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a division of the Department of Homeland Security, will begin a pilot program using the company's new Blackberry 10 smartphone and its BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 mobile enterprise management solution in early 2013. RIM said ICE will be "among the first" government organizations to begin pilot projects with this particular phone, but noted, also, that "ICE has been a valued BlackBerry customer for years." Thus, this is not a new customer acquisition.

In a statement, RIM promised to give further information on the BB10's at a global launch event to be held on January 30.

Shares of RIM are up 5% on the news.
