American Water Works (AWK 1.69%), the largest publicly traded water and wastewater treatment company in the U.S., announced yesterday that its Missouri subsidiary has acquired Meramec Sewer for approximately $500,000 and added some 540 new wastewater customers to its customer base.

Most of the customers already receive their water service from American Water Works' Missouri American Water. The acquisition was approved by the Missouri Public Service Commission on Feb. 20. Missouri American Water is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing water and/or wastewater services to 1.5 million people. Its parent company employs approximately 6,700 people who provide drinking water, wastewater, and other related services to an estimated 14 million people in more than 30 states and parts of Canada.
