Vivus (VVUS) has named J. Martin Carroll and Dr. Jorge Plutzky to its board, the company announced today. The news follows the appointment last month of Robert N. Wilson to the board and brings the board's total number of directors to nine, seven of whom are independent and four of whom have been appointed within the past 13 months.

Plutzky is a leader in the cardiometric field, and is currently the director of the vascular disease prevention program at Brigham and Women's hospital, a post he's held since 1996. Carroll has more than 35 years of experience in the pharma industry, including serving as president and CEO of Boehringer Ingelheim's U.S. division from 2003 to 2011. Wilson is chairman of Mevion Medical Systems and former vice chairman of the board of directors of Johnson & Johnson.

Mark Logan, Vivus chairman of the board, praised Wilson's experience and leadership when his appointment was announced and in today's press release was quoted as saying, "Together Marty and Jorge bring, among other talents, extensive and valuable experience in commercialization, marketing and clinical studies, and we believe they will make immediate and significant contributions to the Board."
