Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Holdings (HCA -1.54%) will soon have a new CFO.

On Monday, HCA announced that when current Chief Financial Officer R. Milton Johnson is promoted to Chief Executive Officer at the end of this year, his old post will be filled by William B. Rutherford.

Rutherford, a 24-year veteran of the firm, briefly left the company to start up his own training and education company in 2005, returning to HCA in 2008. He currently serves as the chief operating officer of HCA's Physician Services Group. He takes over as company CFO on Jan. 1.

The company has not yet settled upon a compensation level for Rutherford, the company said in an SEC filing.
