In terms of operating metrics, Genesee & Wyoming (GWR) had an encouraging Q3 and September. The company has released key figures for both periods, and they're generally higher on a year-over-year basis.

For the month, total carloads came in at 155,650, 7.5% higher than the year-ago September's 144,775. Individual goods categories recording the highest increases were metallic ores, shipments of which advanced just over 29% on a year-over-year basis, waste (23.9%), and petroleum products (18.5%).

In Q3, Genesee & Wyoming's total carloads amounted to 482,823, which is almost 7% higher than Q3 2012's 452,193. As with the monthly results, metallic ores topped the list of best individual category winners with a 37.6% rise. Other strong performers were petroleum products (23.2%) and autos and auto parts (18.7%).
