ANN ARBOR, Mich. (August 20, 1997) -- The Dow gained more than 100 points for the third straight session on Wednesday. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq fared even better percentage-wise, rising 1.44% and 1.75%, respectively.
The Boring Portfolio had a good day, too, picking up 1.55%. Winning holdings outnumbered losers seven to two.
There was little in the way of news on Boring stocks today.
BORDERS GROUP (NYSE: BGP) added $7/16 to yesterday's $1 1/4 gain to close at $24. I spied no news on Borders, but there was an item on "its key competitor," as they say at Borders HQ.
BARNES & NOBLE (NYSE: BKS) signed a deal with Web organizer LYCOS (NASDAQ: LCOS) that makes BarnesandNoble.com the exclusive Internet bookseller on Lycos. B&N previously signed a similar deal with AMERICA ONLINE (NYSE: AOL).
Lycos stock zoomed 20% on the news. As for B&N's, it lost $1/16.
That's gotta be a bit embarrassing to B&N -- especially when Borders stock is rising on the shelves. The German's have a word for my reaction to today's turn of events: Schadenfreude.
Just for fun, I popped that term into Lycos's search engine and came up with 79 references. YAHOO! (Nasdaq: YHOO) came up with 211.
Borders will be launching its e-commerce Web site in time for the holiday selling season. I wonder who they'll partner with?
While we're on the subject of selling in cyberspace, CISCO SYSTEMS (Nasdaq: CSCO) and COMPUSERVE (Nasdaq: CSRV) announced that the Columbus, Ohio-based Internet service provider will become a charter member of the Kid's "Cisco Powered Network" program.
As you may recall, this is Cisco's version of "Intel Inside." The idea is to establish the Cisco brand as a, um, household word and to provide ISPs that participate in the program with a means of differentiating themselves from declasse' competitors who aren't part of the club (although how exclusive can the Kid's club be if they'll even let a Buckeye be a member?).
Oh yeah: CSCO gained $2 5/8.
Interestingly (I guess that's the word), shares of ORACLE (Nasdaq: ORCL) slipped $3/16 on this strong day for Valley stocks. I guess we can
live with that after Oracle's blazing runup since splitting 3-for-2 Monday.
