Boring Portfolio

Boring Portfolio Report
Friday, September 5, 1997
by Greg Markus (TMF Boring)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Sept. 5, 1997) -- Stocks moved higher early Friday following employment and payrolls reports for August that revealed little evidence of inflationary pressures... again. But traders sold into the strength later in the day, sending the Dow and S&P 500 lower, although the broader market fared better. Indeed, the Nasdaq managed an 11-point advance (+0.69%) to sneak in a record high at 1635.

The Boring Portfolio established a new high of its own, at $72,321.25, thanks to a 0.33% advance on Friday. Six holdings rose and two declined, while the ninth -- GREEN TREE FINANCIAL (NYSE: GNT) stayed rooted at $46.25.

For this first, short week of September, the net asset value of the Borefolio swelled by $2353, or 3.36%. That compares with weekly percentage gains of 3.29% and 3.05% for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, respectively. Year-to-date, the Borefolio noses out the S&P 500, 25.70% to 25.42%.

If you're wondering why this recap has devoted three full paragraphs to stats, the truth is there's not a lick of news anywhere to be found on any Boring stocks. Even ORACLE (Nasdaq: ORCL) which can usually be counted on to offer a cryptic daily news release or two -- perhaps in keeping with the company name? -- was mum.

As best as I can determine it, CISCO SYSTEMS (Nasdaq: CSCO) did not acquire on Friday a startup company working on gigabit telepathic networking. BORDERS GROUP (NYSE: BGP) did not announce the opening of a new superstore in East Cowlick, Wyoming. And ATLAS AIR (Nasdaq: ATLS) has not said they are buying surplus B-52s to convert into cargo planes.

PRIME MEDICAL (NASDAQ: PMSI) is not partnering with dermatologists to establish mobile routes for Zit-o-Tron thermotherapy treatment of teenagers' skin problems.

Nor did the Clinton administration and Republican Congressional leadership issue a joint press release to announce a preliminary agreement to privatize Medicare and turn it over to OXFORD HEALTH PLANS (Nasdaq: OXHP) to administer, now that Oxford has the bugs worked out of its state-of-the-art computer information system.

In a related non-announcement from Washington, TIDEWATER (NYSE: TDW) has not entered into a definitive agreement to purchase the entire U.S. Navy's surface fleet, and the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise will not be converted into a deep sea drilling platform.

Finally, CARLISLE COMPANIES (NYSE: CSL) is not merging its cheese-making equipment and roofing supplies operations to commence manufacturing cheddar shingles, ideal for making sandwiches or for home construction.
