ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Oct. 7, 1997) -- The S&P 500 and Nasdaq continued their drive into record territory Tuesday, rising 1.07% and 0.89% respectively. This time, the Boring Portfolio joined them, gaining 1.89% to close at an all-time high of $75,150.
Fractional losses by ATLAS AIR (Nasdaq: ATLS) and CARLISLE COMPANIES (NYSE: CSL) did little to diminish the luster of today's performance. Two holdings -- GREEN TREE FINANCIAL (NYSE: GNT) and TIDEWATER (NYSE: TDW) -- achieved new closing highs, while CISCO SYSTEMS popped $2 1/8 to close just off its own record, at $81 5/8.
Cisco was assisted by positive words from two firms today. Oppenheimer upgraded the Kid to a "buy" on expectations of stronger sequential earnings growth. Oppy set a 12-month target of $95, based on 28-times a projected $3.35 per share for the fiscal year ending July 1999. Also, UBS Securities initiated coverage of Cisco with a "buy" rating and a target of $90.
A rising tide continues to lift all boats in the drilling and energy services group, including those of Tidewater, which surged $9/16 to close at $63 5/8.
Speaking of Tidewater, last night in this space I confessed amazement at finding myself in agreement with something appearing in Alan Abelson's weekly column in Barron's. The current installment of that column has sensibly favorable things to say about stocks of drillers and related outfits. A number of readers emailed me to offer an explanation for this rare event: Abelson's column was guest-written this week by his assistant, Kathryn Welling. Aha!
Shares of OXFORD HEALTH PLANS (Nasdaq: OXHP) often tumble whenever another HMO reports bad news -- a not unusual occurrence lately. It was therefore refreshing to see the Ox rise for a change when another company in the industry had something positive to say. UNITED HEALTHCARE (NYSE: UNH) let it be known today that they were comfortable with analysts' consensus earnings estimates for this year. That buoyed a number of issues in the beleaguered group, including the Ox, which surged $5 3/8 on triple the stock's average trading volume.
As for the Borefolio's other healthcare stock, PRIME MEDICAL (Nasdaq: PMSI) surged $5/8 to close at a bid of $13 7/8. That followed a string of sessions in which PMSI had retraced some of its recent sharp gains.
All in all, a great day for the Borefolio!
