Amazon, AOL Down

ALEXANDRIA, VA (May 22, 1998) -- Okay, so you were expecting TMF Parlay? Just before deadline, Paul was abducted by aliens so he couldn't be here tonight. Because of this, I was begged... er... asked... OKAY, I was threatened with bodily injury if I didn't write the Fool Port tonight.
I'm guessing, given that today is the start of the long Memorial Day weekend, that most of you are planning barbecues, getting geared up to watch the Indy 500, or looking forward to traveling with the other twelve million people estimated to be traveling this weekend. If, by chance, you did decide to drop by the Fool to see what happened in the portfolio today, we thank you.
Equity investors took a hit across the board today with the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Fool all losing ground. The Fool fared the worst though, down 1.71% while the S&P 500 only dropped 0.37%. Some of our heavyweights took us down today, including America Online (NYSE: AOL), which dropped almost $3, and the wildly volatile Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN), which fell about $2 3/4. Morgan Stanley Dean Witter analyst Mary Meeker restarted her coverage of Amazon.com with an "outperform rating." She also lowered her earnings estimates for both 1998 and 1999 substantially. Ms. Meeker was our guest in an interview a few years back, and it makes for a very interesting historical read.
As for the rest of the portfolio, there wasn't much news to sink our teeth into. I'm sure that many of you may be asking yourselves, "Why is 3Dfx falling? How did Iomega ever get below $7? Will the Donald ever be a profitable short?" We can look at news and financial statements, but they don't always tell the whole story.
