Speed Day

ALEXANDRIA, VA (May 28, 1998) -- The major market indices made headway against the Fool Port, gaining more than our humble basket of stocks could muster. The mighty S&P 500, dominated by GE, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, and Intel (a dog for more than the past year), gained 0.49%. The Fool Port --dominated by America Online, Amazon, and Iomega -- tacked on only 0.15%.

Today is called "Speed Day." Slick back your hair, move closer to your monitor, and let's see how fast we can all read:

Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) was rated a "buy" at BA Robertson Stephens, but the stock failed to react. Amazon's stock will split two-for-one next week, meaning that we'll have twice as many shares but at one-half the price per share.

America Online (NYSE: AOL) reached an accord with 44 states that had been suing the company in relation to its recent price increase. Clap those lawyers on the back.

A couple of our Three Stooges companies -- 3Dfx (Nasdaq: TDFX) and Innovex (Nasdaq: INVX) -- bounced higher today. No news -- except for the fact that these stocks have both shed over 30% recently. A Fool named Warren spoke with Innovex management on Tuesday. Not an incredible amount is new, but for the latest, please see his Innovex message board post. Also, a recent 3Dfx post is today's heralded Post of the Day, having been voted to greatness by readers.

Ok, slow down... Let's slow down. Concerns in the marketplace are that we'll see slower earnings growth in the second quarter, so let's slow down ourselves. Here we go -- normal speed:

There was no other substantial news in the Fool Port, yet there's plenty happening around us.

Tom Gardner's Cash-King Portfolio has added two stocks to its ranks this month, buying Gap (NYSE: GPS) and American Express (NYSE: AXP). But Today Tom writes about his two favorite stocks, Coca-Cola and Microsoft. (By the way, if you have trouble keeping up with the buying and selling in the four real-money Fool portfolios, you can subscribe to the Fool's e-mail service and receive the news of any trade in any Fool portfolio in your mailbox on the day of the announcement -- well before the trade is made, of course.)

Elsewhere, the Drip Port covered the advantages of dividend reinvestment plan investing yesterday, and today it covers the disadvantages (with solutions). Finally, yesterday the Boring Port earned the distinction of having its column filed from the furthest distance of any Motley Fool column in history.

The story:

I knew that Greg Markus (TMF Boring) was travelling to Australia this week and I was prepared to write the Boring columns for him. Yesterday by 5 p.m. I hadn't heard from Greg, so I began to write -- but suddenly Greg's name appeared on my screen in my AOL "Buddy List." It was an interesting moment. I knew that -- over 20 hours away by plane and on the opposite side of the world -- Greg had just signed onto America Online. There his name was on my screen, instantly indicating his hook-up. Another second later he sent me a message: "I'm online! I'll be filing the Boring report as soon as possible." And that he did, and here it is -- from around the world, in a second.

Of course, having received email in the past week from India, Japan, Israel, France, etc... I shouldn't be impressed by this new small world anymore, should I? But it's difficult not to be.

Be Foolish...
