1. NVDA Speeds up Vera Rubin Chip Debut
Nvidia (NVDA +1.23%) revealed its next-generation Vera Rubin superchip at CES, which combines a CPU and two GPUs in a single processor, a big step forward in helping to power AI computing demand. Beating the market by 68% since its Hidden Gems recommendation in May 2024, the stock was up around 0.7% ahead of the market open.
- "Rubin arrives at exactly the right moment, as AI computing demand for both training and inference is going through the roof": CEO Jensen Huang referred to it as being a "giant leap toward the next frontier of AI," with the combined Rubin platform offering a 10x reduction in inference token costs.
- Early debut comes months ahead of planned late-2026 launch: The Rubin project became public back in 2024 to replace the existing Blackwell slate, but the accelerated launch comes as it tries to stay ahead of increasing competition.
2. AMD Takes Aim at Nvidia With Helios
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD 2.31%) debuted a new Helios rack unit and upgraded computer chips at the CES 2026 conference, as it takes more of a direct aim at gaining market share from Nvidia.
- "The world's best AI rack": CEO Lisa Su claimed the Helios unit, a key infrastructure component for the AI data center market, was the best out there right now. The stock was flat in the immediate aftermath, and is currently underperforming the S&P 500 by 10% since Team Rule Breakers' January 2024 Stock Advisor recommendation.
- "AMD is in full growth mode": TMF chief investment officer Andy Cross and other Fool analysts noted in a report last November that "with a market capitalization of less than a tenth of Nvidia's, AMD looks attractively valued and has a strong business. It's just not quite as strong as Nvidia, and that casts AMD in an unfavorable light that it doesn't really deserve."
3. Intel Debuts Series 3 AI PC Chips
Intel (INTC +7.34%) showed off new laptop computers with a jump in performance thanks to new Series 3 processors with Panther Lake chips, as the business aims to catch up with rivals in the AI PC space.
- "With Series 3, we are laser-focused on improving power efficiency": Jim Johnson, SVP and GM of Intel's client computing group, talked up the products. The new lineup is designed for multi-takers to handle advanced workloads, including gaming, with features such as a 27-hour battery life.
- Set to power more than 200 PC designs from global partners: Orders for consumer laptops from Intel with the new chips starts today, with the scope of third-party users using the Series 3 making it the most widely adopted AI PC platform Intel has ever made.
