All three report earnings this week, but they are not alone. Motley Fool Stock Advisor favorites Marvel (NYSE:MVL) and Pixar (NASDAQ:PIXR) also step up to announce their latest quarterly results.
One of the week's most interesting reports will come from supermarket giant Safeway (NYSE:SWY). It's not been long since the chain joined rivals Kroger (NYSE:KR) and Albertson's (NYSE:ABS) in putting an end to a painful five-month strike in California, and the scars may run deeper than you think.
Yes, the grocers are in trouble. On Friday, Winn-Dixie (NYSE:WIN) announced that it would be closing 156 of its stores. There was no strike there to shoo away customers, only pesky competitors donning non-traditional war paint. Wal-Mart's (NYSE:WMT) Supercenters are taking a chunk of the local grocery business, while warehouse clubs like Costco (NASDAQ:COST), BJ's (NYSE:BJ), and Wal-Mart's own Sam's Clubs are also nibbling away.
Safeway can't afford to stand still. It isn't. Let's hope that tomorrow morning's conference call sheds some light not only on how well the company is holding up, but on what it is doing to fight back. After all, in investing, as in produce, what's stale just gets picked over.
