A Hong Kong man last year shelled out the equivalent of $910,000 for license plate number 12. According to Reuters, the number sounds like "certainly easy" in Cantonese.

With no state government that we know of auctioning them off, vanity license plates in the U.S. remain much less expensive. For about $30 a year, we can add a touch of personalization to our vehicles.

In the business world, billionaire Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) chairman Warren Buffett is reported to own a 2001 Lincoln Town Car with a license plate reading "THRIFTY." We liked that, and it got us to thinking about other plates we'd like to see from our friends at Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY), and, of course, Overstock.com (NASDAQ:OSTK).
