The following video is part of our "Motley Fool Conversations" series, in which energy editor and analyst Joel South and manufacturing editor and analyst Isaac Pino discuss topics around the investing world.

In this edition, Joel talks about a controversial yet monumental decision facing the current administration. TransCanada recently reapplied to the federal government with hopes of gaining permits to build the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to Steele City, Neb. One camp is opposed to the new pipeline on the grounds that it could cause land and water contamination as well as allow a supply of dirty sand field oil that takes an excessive amount of energy to refine. The other side suggests that this pipeline will not only lessen the United States' dependency on overseas oil but will also create jobs, both of which could be a shoot in the arm for the economy. Watch the video to learn more about the Keystone pipeline as well as what companies stand to benefit from the acceptance of the proposal.
