Hewlett-Packard (HPQ +8.05%) will launch the HP Split x2, a new, two-in-one detachable PC, in August for $799.99.
Designed to function as either a laptop or a tablet, the Split x2 features a "soft-touch" coating for a "comfortable hold" and to protect against smudges. Other features include third-generation Intel Core processor, 13.3" diagonal HD touchscreen display, Beats audio, a multiple-gesture trackpad, and dual-batteries (one in the tablet and another in the base). Customers can also choose to add an optional hard disk in the base (keyboard) for extra storage capacity. It comes with the Windows 8 operating system.
The Split x2 is the third in its lineup of two-in-one-detachable PCs. HP also sells a Slatebook x2 that runs on Android and a slightly cheaper Windows 8 computer, the Envy x2.
Recently, Gartner reported that HP remains the leading supplier of PCs across Western Europe, with a 19.7% market share. However, HP's shipment volumes declined nearly 32% last year during the first quarter.
