Microsoft just closed out a fiscal year, and struggles in its core businesses remain. That hasn't stopped shares from enjoying healthy gains in 2013, though.

Software giant Microsoft (MSFT 0.46%) has enjoyed healthy gains this year, in part due to optimism around activist investor ValueAct taking a decent stake and now trying to score a board seat. The PC market continues to struggle, and Microsoft has not made much progress with penetrating the tablet market with its Surface products, either.
