Who needs autumn when the summer TV season is smoking hot? Not so much network TV shows but rather their record-setting cable cousins. AMC Networks (AMCX -2.09%) has never had so many viewers for Breaking Bad, while Season 4 of Duck Dynasty is pulling in Walking Dead-like numbers.

Two weekends ago, 5.9 million tuned in to watch Breaking Bad's mid-Season 5 premiere. Duck Dynasty's Season 4 opener drew more than double that number: 11.8 million at last count, with 6 million in the coveted 18-to-49 demographic.

Summer's emergence as a legitimate TV-watching season has changed this $2.2 trillion industry, kicking off a fight between entrenched interests such as Comcast and relative newcomers such as Apple.
