Joss Whedon wants The Avengers: Age of Ultron to be better than the original. That's good news for fans and investors alike, Fool contributor Tim Beyers says in the following video.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Whedon called the original "a great time" but necessarily a great film. Bob Iger might disagree. The Avengers set an opening-weekend box-office record here in the U.S. on the way to becoming 2012's top-grossing film.
More importantly, Whedon's work has elevated this once little-known superhero team to franchise status and in the process created a ratings tailwind for Walt Disney's (DIS -0.57%) newest TV show, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Yet Whedon isn't satisfied. "Why do it again if you can't do it better?" he told EW, referring to his motive for writing and directing another Marvel movie That's an audacious goal for a creator who is already well known for developing hit properties. If he succeeds, audiences that paid a collective $1.5 billion to see The Avengers could push Ultron into $2 billion territory.
