Walt Disney (DIS 0.18%) did the predictable and ordered a full season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this week. Now the really hard work begins, Fool contributor Tim Beyers says in the following video.

With a full season of episodes to work with, creator Joss Whedon and his team get to play with plotlines and characters that open viewers to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. That's the good news. The bad? Expectations are riding high. Walt Disney stock investors are expecting Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to help build new billion-dollar franchises that stretch across TV, films, and comics.

That won't be easy. Fans can be fickle and the competition -- notably from CBS's hit drama, NCIS -- is fierce. Whedon should be applauded for getting the show this far. Marvel marketing should be applauded, too, for building a groundswell that's led to a strong open in the ratings. They'll need to keep the momentum in order for Agents to grow into a meaningful catalyst for Walt Disney stock.
