According to the United Nations and reported by Reuters, greenhouse gas emissions fell 1.3% in industrialized nations, led by the the U.S. with a 3.4% drop in 2012. It's still not enough to limit temperature rises, which is why it's important that renewable energy remains a high priority.

Fool contributor Tyler Crowe and energy and materials analyst Joel South talk about which companies will try to seize this opportunity to move forward on solutions. SolarCity (SCTY +0.00%) is one company capitalizing from the move away from traditional carbon-emission power generation. Another is SunPower (SPWR +0.00%), which is getting into solar leasing and is finally making a profit.
