The U.S. wireless carrier space continues to be extremely competitive, and the third quarter of this year proved that once again for Verizon Communications (VZ 1.22%) and AT&T (T 1.21%).
Both carriers are still getting used to the idea of having customers pay directly for devices, rather than wrap the device cost into service plans, which has led to ongoing changes to service plan pricing and battles for new customers. As the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 carriers by subscriber numbers, Verizon and AT&T enjoy their positions at the top, but Verizon's superior network and huge customer additions keep the carrier ahead of the pack.
