There are all kinds of heroes. Some rescue damsels in distress who have been tied to railroad tracks. Others simply refuse to move to the back of the bus. You may not realize it, but here in Fooldom, we have a certain breed of hero, too. I'm speaking of the many heroes in our Fool Community of discussion boards -- those who tirelessly help others by answering questions, offering links to resources, giving advice, and sharing their experiences, among other things.

I see these folks all the time as I hang out on our boards, and I don't thank them nearly enough. Fortunately, our company takes steps to recognize these heroes through our annual Feste Awards. The fifth annual award will be made in January, but right now is the time to nominate Fools.

As board administrator TMF Twitty explained, "We'll accept submissions through Dec. 9, review them internally, and whittle the list down to 10 candidates. From there, we'll let the community vote [from] the following week through Dec. 31 to determine the winner of the fifth annual Feste Award, and the announcement will be made in the second week of January."

Learn more in this post about how you can nominate a hero, and read this review of last year's award.

As a Fool writer, I don't want to nominate anyone through this little article. Instead, I just want to help spread the word that our community is full of many people with a lot to offer. I invite you to try it all out for free for 30 days. As this article points out, we have a wide scope of boards for hundreds of companies of interest, as well as boards for books, movies, sports, politics, pets, and much more. It also describes some features that make our boards different, special and better.

As an example, consider these little exchanges I've run across or participated in recently:

  • I was confounded by a banging in my sink pipes, and Goofyhoofy and others gave me lots of good advice about how to solve the problem.
  • On our Investing Beginners board, Luke77 asked about a company he was interested in, Caribou Coffee (NASDAQ:CBOU), which he saw as an alternative to Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX). The ever-helpful member jbking offered some valuable thoughts on how to evaluate a business, pointing out some numbers that he thought would be good to know.
  • On our Living Below Your Means board, a Community member reported that she'd been fired and had been the victim of sexual harassment. She received more than 100 responses, including some from lawyers, and was given lots of support and advice. Last I checked, the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission was filing a claim on her behalf.
  • On our Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKa) (NYSE:BRKb) board, an insightful and lively discussion ensued about how some of the company's holdings seemed like outmoded buggywhips. Read the whole discussion, which features great posts by members gdefelice, neuroberks, and others. These folks are heroes inspiring many of us to be better investors and educating us, too.

You get the idea. There are lots of great discussions going on in Fooldom, and you can benefit from joining in or just following along. Give us a whirl!

And if you're already a Fool Community member, please take a minute to think about which Fools have impressed and helped you the most this year -- and nominate them for our Feste award.
