On May 7, WellCare Health Plans (NYSE:WCG) released first-quarter earnings for the period ended March 31.

  • Revenues increased by 69.7%, primarily attributable to the increase in the company's membership, including the launch of the Georgia Medicaid health plan, as well as growth in its Medicare prescription drug plan (PDP) product.
  • The medical benefit ratio dropped to 83.8% from 84.5%, owing to better than expected retention of PDP members, which improved formulary compliance and increased generic fill rates.
  • For the second quarter and full fiscal 2007, the company expects revenues of $1.3 billion and $5.2 billion, respectively.
  • The company expects earnings in the range of $1.20 to $1.25 and $4.65 to $4.75 for the second quarter and full fiscal 2007, respectively.
