Since the market high in October of 2007, the S&P 500 first lost nearly 60% of its value before gaining back 65% -- but we're still over 25% off that high.

Financial institutions like Citigroup (NYSE:C) and JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM) and automakers like Ford (NYSE:F) were hit the hardest (and made the most outrageous headlines). But even stocks with limited exposure to either the financial crisis (and the subsequent credit crisis) or the collapse of the housing market -- the Microsofts (NASDAQ:MSFT), the Coca-Colas (NYSE:KO), and the Mercks (NYSE:MRK) of the world -- have been tossed around by fear and greed.

And since we don't know where the market will go from here, how should we position our portfolios for both safety and profit?
